It’s a short week so let’s start off with some fun stuff happening around San Mateo County.
This past weekend two events took place, San Bruno’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on Saturday and one of California’s premier bike races, the Burlingame’s Criterium on Sunday.
Kevin Ross of Temecula took home the title at San Bruno’s hot dog eating contest. Kevin polished off 17 ¾ hot dogs, while Roger Schlafly of Santa Cruz finished 11 hot dogs to come in second place.
San Bruno’s contest is a qualifier for the national round in New York. Kevin’s win earned him a trip to participate in the 91st Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island taking place this coming weekend.
On Sunday, Burlingame’s Criterium, featuring competitors of all ages, raced through the streets of Burlingame. Chris Hipp of Redwood City took the men’s title and Anna Woldring of San Francisco took the women’s title. Congratulations to Chris and Anna!
Burlingame’s Criterium is dedicated to the memory of Ryan Phua, who died in July 2003 at the age of 2. John Phua, a testicular cancer survivor, got involved with the Lance Armstrong Foundation in 1997 after being diagnosed. Proceeds of the 12 and under ride benefit both the Ryan Phua Memorial Fund and the Lance Armstrong supporting cancer-related programs in the Bay Area.
