I don’t often blog about my listings. In fact, this may be my first post in the ‘listings’ category. But, I receive this question so often from potential first time home buyers that I felt it would be good to answer “What type of property would be a good first time investment?” with an example.
Our latest listing, 2071 Plymouth St. Unit H, in Mountain View, is a great example of the type of property a first time home buyer should be looking at. Let’s discuss why…

As I am sure you are aware, the cost of living in the Bay Area is incredibly high – and rents are no exception. I often talk to people who are paying exorbitant rents because they don’t want to buy something that is not their ‘dream home.’ This thought process baffles me because they are essentially throwing money down the drain in rent, when they could buy a townhome or condominium and use this purchase as a stepping stone towards their future dream home.
2071 Plymouth offers unique benefits that any buyer, but specifically first timers, should be looking for. The property is virtually maintenance free. The homeowners’ association takes care of all the landscaping, maintenance and repairs of the major structural components that the typical single family home owner would face personally, making these types of properties very desirable to time-short professionals who merely have to place their furniture and enjoy. Unit H is also an end unit. I tell people all the time to look for end units as they tend to be more private and have better light than others in the complex. Never underestimate the importance of good lighting combined with privacy. And, all other things being equal, end unit townhouses have stronger appreciation potential than single story, interior units.
