Belmont Heights Neighborhood Association Meeting Update

Belmont Heights Belmont CA

Last week, Belmont Chief of Police Mattei and Belmont Police Captain Dan DeSchmidt visited the Belmont Heights, Belmont neighborhood association meeting (BHCIA) to discuss several pertinent issues to Belmont Heights, Belmont home owners.

What Was Discussed?

Some of the topics covered included:

  • An Update on the Al Korn Murder Case
  • Traffic Issues Affecting Belmont Heights, Belmont
  • Recent Burglaries and Thefts in Belmont Heights, Belmont

Update on Al Korn Murder Case in Belmont Heights, Belmont

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Al Korn, a resident of Belmont was murdered in a random act of violence in his Belmont Heights home back in June, leaving many home owners wondering why this intruder would be in this neighborhood. With only one entrance and exit and a low crime rate, we have always felt very safe. As you could imagine, after learning about this recent murder, our sense of safety has been rattled.

The suspect is currently in jail in Yolo County and will not be brought back to San Mateo County until 2010. Both Chief Mattei and Capt De Schmidt commended the BHCIA’s cooperation and open communications and said the BHCIA Yahoo user group paid dividends in getting information out to the community which resulted in witnesses coming forward to provide the Belmont Police Department with information needed to create a police sketch and subsequently identify a suspect.

Traffic Issues Affecting Belmont Heights, Belmont Home Owners

It is important to be aware of safety issues when dropping off and picking up your students at Ralston Middle School. Many parents have noticed cars speeding on Tahoe Drive and Hallmark Drive. Captain De Schmidt suggested parents and home owners note the license plate and description of the vehicle and report it to the Belmont Police who will visit that resident before there is an accident.

Rollover Crash on Hallmark Drive

Captain De Schmidt informed us, and the witnesses confirmed, the recent rollover on Hallmark Drive was not due to speeding. The driver dropped an item, attempted to pick it up and in doing so turned the steering wheel, hitting the parked cars. In an effort to correct, overturned the vehicle.

Recent Burglaries and Thefts in Belmont Heights, Belmont

Personal property was stolen from an open garage door and another intruder kicked open a front door in the upper area of Hallmark when no one was home.

Property crime is slightly up in Belmont, as in most areas because of the current economic climate. However Chief Mattei assured us our “safe neighborhood” is still safe.

Most Important Takeaway?

Get to know more of your neighbors and watch out for each other. Most importantly, do not be hesitant to communicate concerns to your neighbors or even to the Belmont Police Department. Our police officers proved to be as concerned with our community as we are and encouraged residents to call them when necessary.

  1. Kathleen L. Aronson says:

I have lived on Hallmark for 39 years and each year the traffic has increased and the speed on Hallmark has become extremely unsafe. I will be requesting the Public Works Department to add a stop sign on the corner of Hallmark and Lake Road coming up the hill in the hopes that it will slow traffic.

As an example, today they have started to repair Hallmark and even the workers have remarked that the cars and just ignoring the cones and speed up.

I am requesting your support in this matter.

    Thank you.
