Hillsdale – aka “the Lanes” – is just one of the many developments of the Bohannon family who is responsible for the creation of the Hillsdale Shopping Center and many other commercial/residential developments.  Homes here are modest by today’s standards, but neat, tidy and a cut above the cookie cutter 1940s rancher. 

Why is Hillsdale Called “The Lanes”?

Called “the Lanes” because of the many cul-de-sacs incorporated into the subdivision with many a lane ending at a park. 

Where is Hillsdale – The Lanes – Located?

San Mateo’s Hillsdale neighborhod – aka The Lanes – is bordered by 27th Ave to the North, El Camino Real to the East and Alameda de las Pulgas to the West and Hillsdale Blvd to the South.

What Types of Homes Can I Expect in Hillsdale?

Most of the homes were originally 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2 car garage with central gas heat.  Over the years a great many of these older homes have been remodeled, upgraded and expanded giving the area a pride of ownership to be envied. 

How Much Can I Expect to Pay for a Home in The Lanes?

A tad more expensive than other 1940s neighborhoods, Hillsdale is still well within the mid-price range. Most Hillsdale homes sell for between $700,000 and $900,000.

What About Shopping Center Traffic?

While the Hillsdale Shopping Center is the focal point of the area, the layout of the neighborhood mitigates the effect of shopper traffic.

How Walkable is The Lanes?

Hillsdale – The Lanes – is a very walkable neighborhood. Hillsdale Mall, just a few blocks away, provides a lot of shopping, restaurants and coffee spots and Hillsdale Park provides somewhere for the kids to play nearby. With the new Trader Joe’s about a quarter mile away, grocery shopping is much more convenient than it was a few short months ago.
